Art in the Park, the free Friday night of music, art and food that ran in Coral Gables from 2007 through 2012, is back after a 14-year break, now at Ponce Circle Park. The relaunch took place on Friday, October 9, and the next night is Friday, November 13, from 7 to 11 p.m. Admission is free.

If you missed the first one, you have not missed the point. The series is being brought back as a recurring evening in the park, and November is the chance to see what it has become.

Who is behind it

The revival comes from Carnaval Miami, the organization best known for the Calle Ocho Festival, which is run by the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana to benefit the Kiwanis of Little Havana Foundation. Art in the Park is now part of the Carnaval Miami calendar, and the presenting sponsor is MasTec, the Coral Gables-based infrastructure company whose name was on the event during its original run as well.

That continuity matters. The first version of Art in the Park mixed live music, visual art and food in the middle of the city. Carnaval Miami has described the relaunch as the same idea with a fresh vision, rather than a copy of what ran before.

What to expect

The format is an evening in the park: live music, a DJ, artists showing work, and food. The October lineup was posted as save-the-date graphics, and the November program has not been announced yet, so check the event page on Carnaval Miami's site in the weeks ahead.

The supporting sponsors give a sense of how local the event is meant to feel: WSVN 7, Five Iron Golf, Diario Las Américas and Kiddos, among others. Artists who want to show and sell work can sign up through the same page, and questions go to the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana.

Getting there

Ponce Circle Park is in downtown Coral Gables on Ponce de Leon Boulevard, with plenty of restaurants nearby to make a full night of it. Street and garage parking in the Gables fill up on a Friday, so give yourself time.

A blanket or a folding chair will make the night more comfortable.

Why it is worth going

There is a reason this event is coming back rather than being replaced. A free night in a city park with live music and local artists is the simplest kind of civic good, and for people who were in their twenties or raising small kids in the Gables between 2007 and 2012, Art in the Park was part of the rhythm of living here. Its return gives a new round of residents the same thing.

The park around it is also changing. The City of Coral Gables has approved a large Frank Stella sculpture, Puffed and Inverted Star II, for its public art program. A standing Friday night in the park, put on by the people behind Calle Ocho, is a good way to make sure it remains a place people actually use.

Mark November 13. It is free, it starts at 7, and it runs until 11.
