On Sunday, Nov. 15, fifteen young pianists from around the world will play back to back at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, and the people in the seats will decide which one of them advances to the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition in Bolzano, Italy. There is no panel of professional judges for this round. The Miami International Piano Festival, which is presenting the day, has made the audience the official jury.

The event is called the Glocal Piano Festival: Road to the 66th Busoni Piano Competition. According to the Aventura Center, it is an official preliminary selection event for the Busoni competition, and the pianist who collects the most audience votes becomes Miami's official representative when the competition is held in August 2027.

Fifteen recitals, two sessions, one vote

The format is a piano marathon. Each of the fifteen pianists gets a single 30-minute recital, and the day is split into two sessions, one starting at noon and one at 7:30 p.m. The Aventura Center estimates each session runs about three hours. The Busoni organizers say the pianists in this year's preliminary rounds are free to choose their own repertoire, so the program in Aventura will be whatever each performer decides to bring.

The festival says the names of the fifteen pianists will be announced shortly. What is already set is how the vote works. Anyone who wants to serve on the Audience Jury has to attend both sessions and hear all fifteen players. Jurors are asked to judge each recital on artistic excellence, technical mastery, musical interpretation and stage presence, then cast a vote for one pianist. The festival's own description adds that it wants listeners to weigh individuality and imagination alongside technique.

Listeners who only want to hear music do not have to sit for both halves. One festival ticket covers the noon and 7:30 p.m. sessions, and the ticket is not sold by session, but attending both is required only for those taking part in the jury.

Aventura is one stop on a three-continent circuit

The Busoni competition runs its preliminary rounds as a traveling festival. Its 2026 edition lists 120 pianists, nine concert venues and three continents. Aventura's date falls in the middle of a November run that the competition's own schedule lays out like this:

  • Florence, Nov. 8, with Amici della Musica at Teatro Niccolini
  • Paris, Nov. 11, at Salle Cortot
  • Shanghai, Nov. 14, at Shanghai Symphony Hall
  • Aventura, Nov. 15, with the Miami International Piano Festival at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center
  • Tokyo, Nov. 16 and 17, at Toppan Hall
  • Dortmund, Nov. 19 and 20, at Orchesterzentrum NRW
  • Vienna, Nov. 21, at the Wiener Konzerthaus Schubert Saal
  • Rome, Nov. 22, at Sala Petrassi in Parco della Musica, with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia
  • Boston, Nov. 30, at Williams Hall at New England Conservatory

That puts the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on the same list as halls in Vienna, Paris and Tokyo, and makes it one of only two U.S. stops on the circuit. In each city, the audience has a hand in choosing who moves on.

Who is behind it

The day is a collaboration between the City of Aventura, the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center, the Busoni competition, Steinway & Sons and the Miami International Piano Festival, which the Aventura Center notes is sponsored in part by the city. The festival was founded in 1997 and is in its 28th anniversary season. Its 2026 to 2027 schedule includes 20 piano recitals across Aventura, Coral Gables and Miami Beach, and the season opened in Aventura on Oct. 18 with a two-piano program that was also streamed free on the festival's YouTube channel.

The festival frames the Busoni day as part of its long-running focus on finding young pianists early in their careers. For Aventura audiences, it is a chance to hear fifteen performers in a single day and to have a real say in which one gets the next shot on an international stage.
