Boynton Beach Community High School is turning itself into a sports school. Starting in fall 2027, the Tigers' campus on Park Ridge Boulevard will open the Boynton Beach Sports Academy, a set of four new choice programs built around athletics, and the Palm Beach County School District's new choice catalog lists no other high school offering any of them.

What is actually opening

The school laid out the plan on its choice programs page, and the district's 2027-2028 choice booklet backs it up, marking each one as a new program. The academy is not a single track but a cluster of career pathways that all start from sport and lead somewhere else:

Sports Medical Sciences. Anatomy, physiology, injury prevention, rehab, biomechanics and recovery, aimed at teenagers who might end up as athletic trainers, physical or occupational therapists, nurses or paramedics. The school says students in its medical track can already earn certifications in Allied Health Assisting, EKG and Exercise Science. This is the one pathway with an academic bar: a 2.75 GPA.

Sports Performance. Strength, speed, agility, mobility and injury prevention, taught as a science, with an eye toward careers in strength and conditioning, coaching, personal training and fitness management.

Sports Nutrition, Culinary and Hospitality. A culinary and hospitality program reframed around feeding athletes: meal planning, hydration, recovery, food safety and the service side of running a team or a big sporting event. It points toward restaurant, hotel and food service work as much as sports.

Sports Media and Broadcasting. Photography, video, live-event coverage, interviews and graphic design, for students who would rather tell the story of the game than play in it.

Two more pieces sit alongside those four. The school's existing Information Technology program is being rebuilt with an e-sports focus (game technology, streaming, networking and running e-sports events, with a 2.0 GPA requirement), and a Sports Turf Management pathway is listed as coming soon. Picture the kid who mows the outfield learning how professional grounds crews keep a stadium playable.

The BARWIS connection

The name attached to three of the four new academies is BARWIS, the training company built around strength coach Mike Barwis and known for working with professional and college athletes. The school's descriptions say the medical, performance and nutrition academies are run in partnership with BARWIS, and the district booklet bills the performance track as powered by it.

That matters locally because BARWIS is not a far-off brand. Its own site lists South Florida facilities in Boca Raton, Deerfield Beach, Jupiter and Plantation, plus high school and youth training among its services. For a Boynton Beach teenager, the gap between a classroom lesson on recovery and the people who do that work for a living just got a lot shorter.

Why this is a big swing for Boynton

The School District of Palm Beach County counts 335 choice and career programs across its schools, and most themes show up at several campuses. Sports Management, for example, is offered at a handful of high schools and middle schools. The four new sports academies are different: in the 2027-2028 booklet's program-by-program index, each one lists exactly one school, and it is Boynton Beach Community High.

The school frames the launch as more than a course list. Its page promises renovated facilities, a reworked curriculum, new industry partners and expanded career opportunities, and the district booklet's full-page spread for the academy leans on the same idea: new opportunities, new experiences, new spaces. Boynton already had one signature program that pulls students from across the county, the Boynton Aerospace Science Academy, run with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The sports academy gives it a second, aimed at a much larger pool of kids.

How a family gets in

The timing is the useful part. The district's choice window for the 2027-2028 school year opened on October 8, 2026, and it closes on December 4, 2026. Every choice and career academy seat is filled by lottery, and students can apply to any program at any school in the county regardless of where they are zoned. The district says families will also have more room this cycle to accept offers for a first or second pick.

A few details worth knowing before you click:

Eligibility varies by track. Sports Medical Sciences needs a 2.75 GPA and IT/E-Sports needs a 2.0. The school lists no eligibility criteria for Sports Performance, Sports Nutrition and Hospitality, or Sports Media and Broadcasting.

See it in person. The district's open house calendar has Boynton Beach Community High hosting an in-person choice open house on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, from 6 to 7 p.m. The campus is at 4975 Park Ridge Blvd.

Check the bus map. Choice transportation only covers students who live inside a school's designated choice transportation zone. Families outside it need to plan their own rides.

Questions go to the school's choice coordinator, Candice Cleckley, who is listed on the choice programs page.

What it means if you live here

For an eighth grader in Boynton Beach or anywhere else in Palm Beach County who lives for sports but is realistic about the odds of playing professionally, this is a new kind of option close to home: a high school path where the thing you already care about becomes the doorway to physical therapy, broadcasting, nutrition, coaching or event work. And for the neighborhood around Park Ridge Boulevard, it means the local high school is about to become a place families from across the county try to get into, not just a school you are zoned for. Seats come by lottery, the window is open now, and the first class starts in fall 2027.
