The Coral Springs Museum of Art is moving into a new home in the heart of downtown, and it is opening the doors with Pablo Picasso. The relocated gallery at 3380 N. University Drive, at the corner of Sample Road and University Drive, debuts the weekend of October 9 and 10 with Picasso: A Graphic Journey, 57 original prints by the artist, on view through December 5. Regular gallery admission is free.

A new address downtown

For years the museum's gallery shared the Center for the Arts building on Coral Springs Drive. Now it sits in the Modera building at one of the city's busiest corners, steps from City Hall. The museum calls it a new chapter for arts and culture in Coral Springs, and it has a new logo to go with it.

The move does not take anything away. The Creative Studios, where the museum runs its classes for children and adults in drawing, painting, ceramics and mixed media, stay at 2855 Coral Springs Drive. The old gallery space there now works mainly as an event venue that holds about 200 people. The new gallery adds a small multipurpose room, and the museum says a café area is coming.

Picasso, one print at a time

The opening show is a serious one for a city museum. Picasso: A Graphic Journey gathers 57 original prints made between 1923 and 1972: etchings, lithographs and linocuts, plus a rare canceled copper printing plate, the actual metal Picasso's image was printed from before it was marked so no more impressions could be made. The works come from the collection of Timothy Collins of Los Angeles, and the exhibition carries an essay by curator Eric Mourlot.

The detail worth slowing down for is the run of proofs for Tête de Femme au Chapeau. Shown together, the prints trace how Picasso built an image in stages, from early color trials to the finished composition. It is a rare chance to see an artist's thinking laid out on a wall, and it is in Coral Springs, not a drive to Miami.

A second exhibition opens alongside it. Cages and Collage by artist Janet Gold uses collage and three-dimensional assemblage, with vintage papers, faded photographs and fabric, to explore memory and what we choose to keep. It runs through January 30, 2027.

Opening weekend

The celebration starts Friday, October 9, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., with music in the gallery, a cash bar, special activities and a first look at the new space and the Picasso show. Tickets are $10 per person, free for museum members, and are sold in one-hour time slots. Each ticket includes one complimentary drink, and limited-edition merchandise with the new logo will be on sale.

Saturday, October 10, is the free day: the gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no admission charge, the same first look at Picasso, and the same new merchandise.

Talks and workshops this fall

On Saturday, October 24, at 11 a.m., Dr. Nathan J. Timpano, chair of Art and Art History at the University of Miami, gives a free talk on Picasso's prints and the techniques behind them. No registration is needed. Janet Gold leads a creativity workshop on November 12, and on December 5, the closing day of the Picasso show, artist Kaili Woop teaches the basics of Gelli printmaking.

How to visit

Parking is on the ground level of the Modera building lot, entered from Sample Road. It is free on opening day and free with validation at the front desk on regular days, and the City Hall parking garage nearby also offers free parking a short walk away. Gallery hours are posted on the museum's visitor page; confirm before you go, since hours may shift as the new space settles in. The exhibition is supported by the Broward Cultural Division, the City of Coral Springs and Funding Arts Broward. The easiest plan: go on the free Saturday, then come back for the October 24 talk once you have seen the prints.
