The Mike Gerber Quartet plays the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami's free outdoor jazz night on Friday, Oct. 30. Gerber is a jazz pianist, composer and teacher whose résumé, as listed by the museum, includes performances with Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Jaco Pastorius and Pat Metheny.
The concert is part of Jazz at MOCA, which the museum has held on its plaza on the last Friday of the month since 1999. MOCA describes it as the longest-running free outdoor jazz concert series in South Florida.
How the night works
Seating on MOCA Plaza opens at 7 p.m. and the music starts at 8 p.m. Seats are first come, first served, and the museum says guests are welcome to bring their own chairs.
The concert is free. MOCA asks guests to register through the event page on its website; there is no check-in at the door. From 7 to 10 p.m., museum admission is pay what you wish.
One note on the galleries: the museum's page says the galleries closed temporarily on Oct. 5 to install a new exhibition, and it does not give a reopening date. Check mocanomi.org before planning on a gallery visit the same night.
If it rains
Jazz at MOCA goes on rain or shine, with one exception. The museum says the concert may be canceled if rain or other weather pushes the start past 8 p.m., to protect the musicians and the sound equipment.
Who is Mike Gerber
MOCA's listing describes Gerber as a pianist who pairs technical command with a long devotion to improvisation, and who teaches as well as performs. He leads the group from the piano.
