Marta Gálvez, a flamenco dancer from Córdoba, Spain, brings her new work La Velada: An Alchemy of Past and Present to the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center this weekend, for an evening show on Saturday, Oct. 24, and a matinee on Sunday, Oct. 25.

Saturday's performance starts at 8 p.m. and Sunday's at 2 p.m., at the center at 3385 NE 188th St. in Aventura.

The piece

La Velada looks at the point where flamenco's tradition meets the present. According to the venue and the presenters, Gálvez draws on the legacy of the dancers who came before her and turns it into a personal, contemporary piece. She is the work's director, choreographer and dancer, and she designed its lighting as well.

She performs with a three-piece group: David Durán on guitar, Rosa Linero singing and Luis Dorado on percussion. Begoña Fernández is credited with the dramaturgy. The production is by Spain Flamenco Arts.

Who Marta Gálvez is

Gálvez was born in Córdoba and began flamenco training at age 3. She holds a degree in Spanish Dance from the Professional Dance Conservatory and studied on scholarship at the Andalusian Dance Center.

Her professional résumé, as listed by the presenters, includes the companies of David Coria, María Pagés, Úrsula López, José Porcel and Juan Carlos Avecilla. She won an Outstanding Dancer Prize in 2015, and in 2023 the Provincial Council of Córdoba gave her its Young Flamenco Artists Award.
