McNab Road in Pompano Beach is close to getting its bridge back. The City of Pompano Beach expects the new McNab Road bridge to reopen to traffic by Sunday, Nov. 1, if the weather cooperates, after a closure that began this spring. The rest of the street project around it is scheduled to wrap up in December.
The bridge it replaces was built in 1959. The city had described the old span as functionally obsolete and at the end of its useful life. The new one stands about four feet higher, giving boats more room underneath and holding up better against higher water, and it is designed to last more than 50 years.
What is being built
The work covers McNab Road from South Cypress Road east to Federal Highway, and the bridge is only part of it. The full project includes:
- A complete bridge replacement with greater vertical and horizontal clearance for boats.
- ADA-compliant sidewalks and ramps.
- Road resurfacing, LED street lighting and upgraded drainage.
- New pedestrian and bicycle facilities.
- Improved bus stops and shelters.
- Upgraded stormwater, water, wastewater, fiber optic and gas lines, plus new Florida Power & Light conduit and poles.
- New landscaping along the corridor.
The project is a priority of G.O. Pompano!, the bond program Pompano Beach voters approved in 2018.
Why the date moved
Road and bridge closures on McNab began in mid-April. The city pushed the bridge's reopening target to Nov. 1 after a long stretch of rainy-season weather slowed construction. Boat traffic on the waterway under the bridge stayed open through most of the work under a plan approved by the South Florida Water Management District, with periodic safety closures, including a 10-day full closure to boats that began July 22.
Getting around until it opens
While the bridge is closed, through traffic is detoured along Federal Highway and Cypress Creek Road. Atlantic Boulevard to the north and 62nd Street to the south are the other alternate routes. Residents, businesses, buses, mail carriers, trash trucks and delivery drivers have kept access to their stops on McNab throughout the closure.
The Nov. 1 target depends on the weather and on no unexpected construction problems, so drivers should watch for the barricades to come down rather than count on the date. The city posts project updates on its G.O. Pompano! McNab Road page and through its email notifications, and residents can report a problem through the city's online issue reporter or by calling City Hall at 954-786-4600.
