The most talked-about sign in Deerfield Beach this fall was written by hand. Munchy's Pizza & Wings, a family-run slice shop at 606 S. Federal Highway, told its followers in September that it would not use artificial intelligence to make its ads, and it backed that up the old way: with markers, paper and a lettered poster taped up for the camera.
The post landed. By the first weekend of October the shop was thanking CBS Miami on its Instagram for helping shine a light on small businesses, and a pizzeria best known locally for chicken wing crust and stuffed pies had become a small symbol of something a lot of people seem to be missing.
What the shop actually said
The September 7 post is short and blunt. Munchy's described itself as a local mom-and-pop pizza shop and promised no AI and no fake food, only real pizza made by real people. It listed what that means in practice: dough tossed by hand, the best cheese the owners say they can buy, fresh toppings, and food that looks good in a photo and tastes better in person. The image itself is a handmade poster announcing that the shop will not be promoting itself with AI-generated graphics.
That last detail is the point. Scroll through almost any restaurant feed in Broward County right now and you will find glossy images that were never cooked, plated or photographed. Munchy's went the other direction on purpose. Its promotions are scrawled, sketched and a little messy, which is exactly what makes them believable.
Why it is personal for this shop
There is a backstory in plain sight. The bio on the shop's current Instagram account notes that its original page, @munchyspizza__, was hacked when it had roughly 30,300 followers. For a neighborhood pizzeria that built its audience one slice video at a time, that is years of work gone. The new account is rebuilding from scratch, and the anti-AI message reads less like a gimmick and more like a shop deciding to trust the things it can control: the oven, the dough and the people behind the counter.
The shop leans into that crew. A mid-September reel introduced the team and gave the spotlight to the owner, whom the staff simply call Munchy, describing him as the man and the legend behind the whole operation. It is the kind of post you only get from a place where the owner is actually in the building.
What is coming out of the oven
If the sign gets people in the door, the menu is what keeps Munchy's in the conversation. This is not a minimalist Neapolitan room. The shop is known for over-the-top builds, and its own site and social posts lay out the lineup:
- The TTT pizza: part pizza, part calzone, with garlic rolls running down the middle and a chicken wing crust, posted just this week.
- Chicken wing crust pie: pepperoni, ricotta and a hot honey drizzle on a crust built from wings.
- Specialty crusts: garlic roll, meat spiral, spinach spiral and stuffed crust, all listed on the shop's ordering site.
- House specialties: a two-layer stuffed pizza with six toppings, a Chicago-style deep dish, a mac and cheese pizza, and a Hangover Pizza topped with eggs and fries.
- The new mega mozzarella stick: added in late September, filled with Bacio mozzarella, finished with Parmesan and parsley, and served with a spicy vodka sauce for dipping.
Wings come in ten styles, from lemon pepper and teriyaki to chipotle ranch, with honey garlic Parmesan as the flavor the shop keeps putting in front of the camera.
How to go
Munchy's sits on South Federal Highway (US 1) in east Deerfield Beach, an easy stop on the way to or from the beach. The shop's site lists hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and the phone number is 954-531-6870. It sells pizza by the slice, takes pickup and dine-in orders, and delivers through Slice, the ordering platform for independent pizzerias that it has worked with for years.
The shop has also been running Friday deals for its followers. On recent Fridays it has offered 15 percent off pickup and dine-in orders to anyone who shows they follow Munchy's on Instagram or TikTok (the TikTok handle is @munchys_pizza), and in September it paired that with a weekend run of 99-cent wings on five- and ten-piece orders. Check the shop's latest posts before you go, since the specials change and the two deals were not stackable.
Why it caught on
Nobody needs a pizzeria to take a position on technology. But the reaction to a handwritten sign in a Deerfield Beach strip of US 1 says something about what customers want from the places they eat. People can tell the difference between a menu photo that was generated and one that was taken over a hot counter at 9 p.m., and a lot of them would rather see the real thing, sauce smudges included.
For residents of Deerfield Beach, it is a reminder that the most interesting food in town is often in the least polished places. A family shop that lost its online following and responded by picking up a marker is worth a visit on principle. That it also puts garlic rolls inside a calzone inside a pizza makes the decision easy.
