A big new restaurant is coming to one of the best known addresses on Las Olas Boulevard. Naia, a Mediterranean restaurant built around cooking over fire, is set to open this fall at 904 E. Las Olas Blvd. in downtown Fort Lauderdale, and it comes from The Restaurant People, the Fort Lauderdale group behind YOLO, S3 and Boatyard.

For anyone who has spent a Friday night on Las Olas in the last thirty years, 904 is not just a street number. It is the corner many longtime locals still connect with Mango's, the live music bar and restaurant that held the spot for years before other tenants came and went. A corner that size, in the middle of the boulevard's busiest block, has been waiting for a tenant with the scale to fill it.

What Naia is going for

The restaurant's own site describes a place built on contrasts: the warmth of an open flame against the calm of the water, energy against stillness, a room that is lively without being loud. On the plate, that translates to Mediterranean cooking touched by fire. The full menu has not been published yet, but a fire-driven Mediterranean kitchen is the kind that does its best work with seafood, vegetables and breads that pick up a little char, and a Las Olas crowd that spends half the year outdoors is a natural fit for it.

It will not be small. State records show room for more than 230 seats, which puts Naia among the larger dining rooms on Las Olas and in the same league as the group's other big downtown spots. A room that size is built for groups, birthdays and the before-and-after crowd from the Broward Center and the riverfront, as much as for a quiet dinner for two.

Who is behind it

The Restaurant People are about as local as a restaurant group gets. Headquartered on South Andrews Avenue, the group runs a collection of downtown and beachfront places that most Broward residents have been to at least once: YOLO and O Lounge on Las Olas, S3 on Fort Lauderdale Beach, Boatyard on the Intracoastal, Rosa Sky Rooftop, Giselle, Casablanca Cafe and its newest oceanfront rooftop, Nubé.

That track record matters. A new concept on Las Olas from a first-time operator is a gamble. A new concept from a group that has kept several of the boulevard's busiest rooms full for years is a much safer bet, and it means the people running Naia already know the street, the crowd and the rhythm of a Fort Lauderdale season.

What it means for Las Olas

For residents, the practical upshot is simple. A dark storefront in the middle of the boulevard's busiest block is about to turn back into a lit dining room with a patio, and one of the boulevard's most recognizable corners gets an anchor again. Neighboring shops and bars tend to benefit when a big corner like this reopens, because a full restaurant puts people on the sidewalk at every hour that matters.

When it opens, and how to keep track

Naia has not posted a firm opening date on its own site yet; it says only that it is coming this fall. The restaurant is hiring now through The Restaurant People, which is usually a sign that opening day is getting close. The fastest way to hear when reservations open is the newsletter signup on naialasolas.com, or the restaurant's Instagram, @naialasolas.

Naia is at 904 E. Las Olas Blvd., Fort Lauderdale. The phone number is 954-775-8673. If you used to end nights at Mango's, it is worth a walk past in the next few weeks to see what has become of the corner.
