West Palm Beach gets a new hotel in two weeks. The Nora Hotel, a 201-room house at 1135 North Railroad Avenue in the Nora District just north of downtown, starts taking overnight guests on Monday, Oct. 19. The hotel's own reservation system shows no rooms for the night of Oct. 18 and a full menu of rooms from the 19th on, which makes that Monday the first night anyone sleeps there.

It is a bigger arrival than one more hotel in a city that has been adding them. The Nora is the first ground-up hotel that BD Hotels has built anywhere outside New York City. That is the company behind The Bowery, The Mercer and The Greenwich, three Manhattan hotels with a following well beyond the people who stay in them. For its first try at building from scratch somewhere else, it picked a block of old railway warehouses in West Palm Beach.

What is inside

According to the hotel's announcement when the building topped off, the project pairs interiors by Gachot Studios with architecture by Stantec, and the look leans hard on the Mediterranean and Spanish Colonial Revival style that has defined Palm Beach since the 1920s: arched walkways, tile mosaics and a loggia garden at the entrance. Anyone who has walked Worth Avenue's vias will recognize the vocabulary.

The food and drink are where most locals will meet the place, and the hotel's site lists four pieces:

  • Pastis, the Parisian-style brasserie from Stephen Starr's STARR Restaurants, takes more than 13,000 square feet on the ground floor. The hotel lists it as arriving this fall, so do not assume it serves dinner the same night the first guests check in.
  • Lillys Rooftop, the pool deck up top, with private cabanas, two bars and a restaurant and lounge that STARR also runs.
  • Jack's, a bar the hotel describes as a nod to the old glamour and the industrial past of the neighborhood around it.
  • Pastis Privé, a private room for events.

There is also a Sisley Paris spa, the French skincare house's treatment rooms, and the hotel has joined The Leading Hotels of the World, the membership group that books many of the best known independent luxury hotels.

What a night costs

For a sense of scale, the opening night rates on the hotel's booking page this week started at $347 before taxes and fees for a Superior King, a 340 to 400 square foot room, on the prepaid, nonrefundable rate. A Grand Deluxe King, at 400 to 460 square feet, was listed at $409, and the terrace version of that room at $435 with only a couple left. Rates move, and they will move a lot once season starts, so treat those as a snapshot rather than a promise.

For West Palm Beach, that pricing lands the Nora between the business hotels downtown and the island resorts across the Intracoastal. It is the kind of place a visiting friend books, or that you book yourself for a night out that does not end with a drive home.

Why the timing matters

Opening in the third week of October is not an accident. Palm Beach season runs roughly from late fall to Easter, and a hotel that opens now has its restaurants, its rooftop and its staff settled before the winter crowd arrives in force. The same logic explains why so many restaurants in the county aim for October and November openings: a place that is still finding its feet in January has missed its best months.

It also matters for the district. The Nora District broke ground on its first phase in mid-2023, turning historic railway warehouses along North Railroad Avenue into a street of shops and restaurants at ground level with offices above, more than 150,000 square feet in all, according to the developers. Districts like this live or die on foot traffic after 5 p.m. A 201-room hotel puts several hundred people a night within a short walk of every storefront on the street, and a 13,000 square foot brasserie gives everyone else in the county a reason to drive over.

Who built it

The hotel was developed by BD Hotels with NDT Development, Place Projects and Wheelock Street Capital, and Moss Construction handled the build. The district's master plan was drawn up alongside the City of West Palm Beach and the planning firm PlusUrbia. Put plainly: the people who made the hotel are New York hoteliers betting that a neighborhood north of downtown West Palm Beach is ready for the kind of place they usually build in SoHo.

If you want to go

The Nora Hotel is at 1135 North Railroad Avenue, West Palm Beach, just north of downtown. Rooms can be booked through the hotel's website from Oct. 19 on. You do not need a room to see it: the rooftop and bars are the easiest way in for anyone who lives here, and Pastis will be the one to watch for once it sets an opening date. If you have been waiting for a reason to see what has happened on the old warehouse blocks north of downtown, the next few weeks are it.
