Two Pompano Beach public schools have earned one of the top designations the state hands out. Broward County Public Schools announced on Oct. 22 that Palmview Elementary and Pompano Beach High School are among the district schools named Schools of Excellence by the Florida State Board of Education for the 2025/26 school year.

Palmview, on Northeast First Avenue near Copans Road, is on the district's elementary list. Pompano Beach High, on Northeast 13th Avenue, is one of seven Broward high schools on the list. They are the only Pompano Beach schools named this year.

What the Designation Means

The state ties the title to performance over time rather than a single year. To qualify, a school has to rank at or above the 80th percentile among schools of its grade level in at least two of the previous three school years, measured through Florida's school grading system.

The designation comes with practical changes inside the building. According to the district, Schools of Excellence receive more flexibility and autonomy over administrative, instructional and operational requirements, and they become eligible for possible additional funding.

Superintendent Howard Hepburn described the recognition as a reflection of the district's shared commitment to academic excellence, and the district named dozens of schools across the county, from elementary and primary learning centers to middle and high schools.

Palmview Elementary

Palmview is a neighborhood elementary school at 2601 NE First Ave. Its own record of results runs back several years. The school says it led Broward County in science learning gains on the Florida Statewide Science Assessment in 2023-24, and it ranked No. 1 among Florida's traditional elementary schools for math learning gains on the 2021-22 FAST assessment. Florida TaxWatch gave the school an Outstanding Leadership Award for its FAST results in reading, math and science, and Palmview has also been recognized as a Florida Title I School of Distinction.

The school runs teacher-led after-school clubs and takes part in the district's one-to-one laptop program, which lets eligible students take home a district-issued computer.

Pompano Beach High School

Pompano Beach High, at 600 NE 13th Ave., is a magnet school and a Cambridge school, and it carries an A rating from the state. The school offers more than 25 Advanced Placement courses and dual enrollment classes taught on campus, so students can earn college credit without leaving the building. Its magnet offerings include a computer science program.

Students enroll at Pompano Beach High through its magnet programs rather than a neighborhood boundary, which means its students come from across Broward County.

For Families
