Pérez Art Museum Miami opens Picasso–Klee–Matisse: Masterpieces from the Museum Berggruen on Thursday, Oct. 29: about 100 paintings, watercolors, drawings and sculptures from the Museum Berggruen in Berlin. The museum says it is the largest presentation of the Berggruen collection on the East Coast. It runs through Feb. 28, 2027.
The collection has toured Japan, China, France, Italy and Spain before reaching Miami, according to PAMM.
What is in the show
The exhibition is built around six artists: Pablo Picasso, Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, Alberto Giacometti, Paul Cézanne and Georges Braque. PAMM says it follows the long careers of Picasso and Klee, includes Matisse's paper cut-outs and Giacometti's elongated figures, and traces how early modern painters handled color, abstraction and the human figure, through to the arrival of Cubism.
Works named in the museum's materials include:
- Picasso's La Lecture (Woman Reading), an oil on wood from 1953
- Cézanne's Portrait de Madame Cézanne, an oil from about 1885, and a watercolor study of an apple from the same period
- Klee's Landschaft in Blau (Landscape in Blue), a 1917 watercolor
- A Matisse gouache cut-out from 1943, a design for the cover of the art magazine Verve
The galleries are arranged by subject: still lifes, interiors, portraits and landscapes. PAMM adds works from its own collection by Diego Rivera, Joaquín Torres-García and Wifredo Lam.
Who Heinz Berggruen was
The collection was assembled over more than four decades by Heinz Berggruen (1914 to 2007), a European dealer and collector who ran a gallery in Paris and was known for his close relationship with Picasso. His collection is now housed at the Museum Berggruen in Berlin. The exhibition also looks at his role in the art worlds of postwar Paris and Berlin.
The show was organized by the Museum Berggruen, the Neue Nationalgalerie and the Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz together with PAMM. It is co-curated by Natalie Zimmer, curator at the Museum Berggruen, and Maritza M. Lacayo, associate curator at PAMM. Lead support comes from Kenneth C. Griffin and Griffin Catalyst, Patricia and William Kleh, Aaron and Dorothy Podhurst and an anonymous donor.
