Five hundred drones will rise over the Atlantic just south of the Fisher Family Pier on Saturday, Nov. 7, when the City of Pompano Beach stages its Drone Show Extravaganza for the fifth year. The show starts at 7 p.m., runs about 15 minutes, and is free and open to the public, with live music on the sand before and after it from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

The city says it started the tradition in 2022 as the first municipal drone show in South Florida. This year's program is a new production by Firefly Drone Shows, built around tributes to the country's service members and to Pompano's own coastline, and it falls on the Saturday before Veterans Day, which is Wednesday, Nov. 11.

What happens when

The evening is laid out in blocks, according to the city's Parks and Recreation event page:

  • 5:30 to 6 p.m.: DJ set on the beach
  • 6 to 7 p.m.: live band
  • 7 to 7:15 p.m.: the drone show, flown over the ocean just south of the pier
  • 7:15 to 8:15 p.m.: more live music
  • 8:15 to 9 p.m.: DJ closes the night

The live music comes from Junior's Entertainment Group, which will play Top 40 and retro hits in English and Spanish. The city adds that on a clear night the drones can be seen from as far as five miles away, so the show is visible well beyond the crowd at the pier.

Where to stand

The Fisher Family Pier is at 222 N. Pompano Beach Blvd. Spectators gather on the beach on the south side of the pier. The north side is closed off for drone staging, and the pier itself is shut for the full day: it closes at 10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, and reopens at 7 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 8. On a normal day the pier is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Blankets, lawn chairs and coolers are welcome. Glass containers, alcohol, pets, personal fireworks and personal drones are not allowed. Wheelchair users can reach the sand on one of six beach access mats. Boaters who want to watch from the water have to stay outside the swim buoys and the drone safety zone.

Parking, shuttles and road closures

The Pier Parking Garage charges a flat $20, cash only, on show night. Other city lots and metered street spaces go to a holiday rate of $4 an hour.

Another option is the free shuttle from Pompano Community Park. Buses pick up near the Aquatic Center at 820 NE 18th Ave. starting at 1 p.m. and drop riders at the Beach Branch Library, 3250 NE 2nd St., a short walk from the sand. The last shuttle to the beach leaves the park at 6 p.m., and the last ride back leaves the beach at 10 p.m. Rideshare pickups and drop-offs are also handled at the Beach Branch Library. The city's free electric Pompano Beach Circuit is running too and can be booked through the Ride Circuit app or flagged down.

Drivers should plan around closures. Riverside Drive is closed from NE 14th Street to 2nd Street from 2 to 10 p.m., with proof of residency required to get through. North Pompano Beach Boulevard and eastbound Atlantic Boulevard at Harbor Drive may close as early as 6 p.m.

Watching from home

For anyone who cannot make it to the beach, the city will stream the show on its YouTube channel (@mypompanobeach), on its live stream page and on Comcast Channel 78 (digital 1092).

The event is supported by the businesses of the Pompano Beach Fishing Village, the row of restaurants and shops next to the pier, along with Firefly Drone Shows.
