Pompano Beach's stables are holding a costume contest for two species on Sunday. The Horse & Hound Costume Event takes over Sand & Spurs Equestrian Park, 1600 NE Fifth Ave., from 3 to 7 p.m. on Oct. 25, with the dogs judged first and the horses an hour later. It is the centerpiece of a week in which the city's parks department runs three Halloween parties and the Pompano Beach Cultural Center hosts two tribute concerts.

Horse & Hound Costume Event: Sunday, Oct. 25

The city's Parks and Recreation Department puts this one on with the Sand and Spurs Stables Committee. The schedule runs in order of size:

  • 4 to 5 p.m.: hound costume contest
  • 5 to 6 p.m.: horse costume contest
  • 6 to 7 p.m.: horse show

Around the contests there are hayrides, a 360-degree photo booth, food trucks and a bounce house for small children. Costumes are encouraged for people, dogs and horses alike. The city's listing gives 954-786-4111 for questions.

Monster Mash Dance: Friday, Oct. 23

The city's therapeutic recreation team hosts a free Halloween dance for participants 13 and older with developmental disabilities, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center, 1801 NE Sixth St. The night includes games, dancing and a costume contest. Registration is through the city's parks website, and anyone who needs an accommodation can call the therapeutic recreation specialist at 954-786-7841.

The Wilburys tribute: Friday, Oct. 23

At 7:30 p.m. the Pompano Beach Cultural Center stages The Wilburys, A Traveling Tribute, a band built around the songs of the Traveling Wilburys, the supergroup of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Tom Petty. The set list draws on Handle With Care, End of the Line and Last Night. Tickets start at $45. The show comes from an outside producer that has leased the hall, and the city's arts department notes it is not a city production.

December '63: Sunday, Oct. 25

Two days later the same stage hosts December '63, a concert recreation of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons that walks through each stage of the group's career. It starts at 2 p.m. Tickets start at $45, and this show is also a private rental of the Cultural Center.

Boots and Ghouls: Friday, Oct. 30

The E. Pat Larkins Center hosts a Halloween line dance party for fans of R&B, hip-hop and gospel from 6 to 9 p.m. Dances run from beginner to intermediate. The party is for adults 18 and older, and tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. The center's number is 954-786-4585.

HalloSCREAM: Saturday, Oct. 31

On Halloween night the McNair Center, 951 NW 27th Ave., throws a free party with music and costumes from 6 to 8 p.m., open to all ages. Children under 5 must come with an adult. The center's number is 954-786-7882.

Plan the week

The parks events are listed with times and registration links at parks.pompanobeachfl.gov/events. Tickets for both Cultural Center concerts are sold through pompanobeacharts.org. Next up on that stage is the city's own Pompano Players company, which opens Gutenberg! The Musical! on Nov. 6.
