The Seminole Theatre on Krome Avenue opened on Nov. 26, 1921, as a cinema showing silent films. Starting the first week of November, it is also a place to learn salsa. Downtown Homestead's historic theatre is launching three five-week adult dance programs, salsa, heels dance and line dancing, open to beginners and priced at $20 a class.
The three programs
Salsa meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 24 and Dec. 1.
Heels dance is scheduled on the same Tuesdays, also at 7 p.m., according to the theatre's listings.
Line dancing meets Wednesdays at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4, 11, 18 and 25 and Dec. 2.
Each program costs $80 for all five classes, or $20 to drop in for a single class. The theatre's listings say no experience is necessary, and the salsa listing welcomes both first-timers and dancers with some experience. The Seminole Theatre Bar opens for happy hour after class.
Tickets for the classes are sold through the theatre's website, and its listings note a transaction fee on orders and that sales are final except when an event is canceled.
A 1921 building with a second act
According to the theatre, the Seminole opened as a movie house showing the silent pictures of the day and became a center for entertainment and social life in South Dade and the upper Keys. Today it is managed by OVG360, with the City of Homestead listed as a partner, and its calendar runs from student shows to tribute concerts.
The dance classes join a lineup of participatory programs at the theatre this fall, including a fall vocal course for small groups that runs through Dec. 17.
