One of the biggest names in American cancer medicine now has a front door on Legacy Avenue. Tampa General Mass General Brigham Cancer Care, a 10,000-square-foot radiation oncology center at Legacy Place in Palm Beach Gardens, is open and treating patients, the first project to come out of a partnership between Tampa General Hospital and Boston's Mass General Brigham.

Why a Boston system is in Palm Beach Gardens

Mass General Brigham is the Harvard-affiliated system behind Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's, and its cancer institute is one of the most recognized in the country. Tampa General is the academic medical center on the other side of the state. The two announced a joint venture in January to build a network of outpatient specialty care along Florida's East Coast, and according to Mass General Brigham's announcement, this center is the first piece of it to open.

The division of labor is unusual, so it is worth spelling out. The doctors who see you are from the Cancer Center of South Florida, a local radiation oncology practice. Tampa General runs the clinic day to day: the protocols, the scheduling, the operations. Mass General Brigham's cancer institute sits over the top, overseeing quality and safety, weighing in on complicated cases and opening a path to its subspecialists and research. Treatment plans are reviewed by tumor boards and peer review across the partners, per Tampa General's page for the center.

For a patient in Jupiter, Juno Beach or Palm Beach Gardens, the practical upshot is that a second opinion from a Boston academic team no longer requires a flight. The center lists subspecialty consultations and second opinions among its services, along with referrals into clinical trials when they fit.

What it treats, and with what

This is a radiation oncology center, which means it delivers radiation therapy rather than surgery or infusion chemotherapy. Tampa General lists breast, brain and central nervous system, gastrointestinal, gynecologic, lung, lymphoma, prostate and skin cancers among the conditions treated. It also treats two conditions that are not cancer at all: keloids, the raised scars that can grow back after removal, and osteoarthritis, where low-dose radiation is sometimes used to ease joint pain.

The equipment is current. Treatment runs on a Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator, the machine that shapes and aims the radiation beam. It is paired with VisionRT surface-guided radiation therapy, which uses cameras to track the surface of the body in real time so the beam lines up with where the patient actually is on the table. Planning starts on a GE CT simulator, where the team maps the treatment area before the first session.

The physicians named on the center's page are Dr. Eugene C. Shieh, the Cancer Center of South Florida's East Coast clinical director, and Dr. Xuguang Scott Chen, both radiation oncologists. Around them is the full team a radiation course needs: medical physicists and dosimetrists who calculate the dose, radiation therapists who run the machine, nurses and patient navigators.

What the building is like

Radiation therapy often means coming in five days a week for several weeks, so the waiting room matters more than it would for a one-time visit. Tampa General describes natural light, nature-themed art, beverage stations, puzzle and activity tables and a range of seating, plus soundproofed check-in and checkout desks and private consultation rooms. Treatment and simulation rooms stock blankets and pillows. Parking is free and on site, which anyone who has done daily treatments at a hospital garage will appreciate.

How to get an appointment

The first visit follows a referral from your physician. That consultation with a radiation oncologist covers your diagnosis, history and imaging and walks through the options. Appointments and consultation requests go through 561-605-3030, and the center's address is 11285 Legacy Avenue, Suite 100, per the Cancer Center of South Florida's locations page. The center says it serves patients from across Palm Beach and Martin counties.

What it means for the north county

A cancer diagnosis comes with enough decisions already; whether to drive to Miami, fly to Boston or settle for whatever is closest should not have to be one of them. Now a patient in the north end of the county can get radiation treatment close to home with Mass General Brigham's oversight, near the shops and restaurants of Legacy Place. If the joint venture builds the East Coast network it describes, this corner of Palm Beach Gardens is where it started.
