The busiest stretch of downtown Lake Worth Beach this week is a single block of Lake Avenue and the corner of J Street around the back of it. The Lake Worth Playhouse is closing the first production of its 74th main stage season, and Rudy's Pub keeps its free Thursday blues and Saturday song circle going in the room that once held the Bamboo Room. Here is what is worth leaving the house for between Monday, October 12, and Sunday, October 18.
Thursday, Oct. 15: the Westside Blues Band, no cover
Every Thursday from 8 to 11 p.m., Rudy's Pub at 21 S. J St. hands its stage to the Westside Blues Band and whoever they invite up that night. There is no cover charge, and the kitchen runs grinders, burgers, wings and tacos while the band plays. Rudy's opened on Valentine's Day 2011, and in February 2024 it expanded into the Bamboo Room, the downtown space that built Lake Worth's name as a blues town, so the music now has two indoor rooms and a patio to work with.
Why go: free live blues on a weeknight, a short walk from Lake Avenue, is the kind of habit that keeps a downtown alive, and this one has been running long enough that the regulars will make room for you.
Friday through Sunday, Oct. 16 to 18: last four chances to see Falsettos
The Playhouse opened its 2026 to 2027 main stage season on Oct. 2 with Falsettos, William Finn's musical (book by Finn and James Lapine) about a man named Marvin, his family, and the people who become family around him as the world shifts under them in New York. This production uses a live band rather than recorded tracks. Four performances remain: Friday at 7:30 p.m., Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Show-only tickets are $44. Students can get in for $20 with ID, but those seats are sold only through the box office at 561-586-6410. The Playhouse also sells dinner-and-show packages, from $74 to $126, that pair a seat with a meal at a partner restaurant; diners for evening shows need to be seated at the restaurant by 5:45 p.m. The Playhouse recommends the show for ages 14 and up because it deals frankly with relationships, illness and loss, including HIV and AIDS.
Why go: Falsettos is funny and then devastating, and seeing it with a live band in a theater built in the 1920s, with the audience close enough to see faces, is a very different experience from a cast recording. Once Sunday's matinee ends, the stage turns over to a holiday mystery.
Saturday, Oct. 17: Pickers in the Round
From 1 to 5 p.m. every Saturday, Rudy's turns its main room into a song circle called Pickers in the Round. Local players sit in a ring and trade songs rather than perform a set at an audience.
Why go: if you play, bring an instrument; if you do not, this is the most relaxed way to spend a Saturday afternoon downtown, and it pairs well with a late lunch on the patio before an evening show up the street.
Saturday, Oct. 17: Mila Vixen Live
That night at 7:30, comedian Mila Vixen takes the Stonzek Studio Theatre for a roughly 90-minute set with no intermission, built on personal stories and back-and-forth with the crowd. It is part of the Playhouse's limited engagement series, which brings in outside acts for one night at a time. Tickets are $30 plus a $5 order fee.
Why go: the Stonzek is small enough that audience interaction actually means you, so this works best with friends who can take a joke, and it starts early enough to leave time for a drink on Lake Avenue afterward.
Getting around downtown
Everything on this list sits inside a few blocks of Lake and Lucerne avenues and J Street, but parking near the Playhouse gets tight on show nights. The Lake Worth Beach Community Redevelopment Agency notes in its downtown map and business guide that the electric Circuit ride-share covers downtown for $1 per rider, per trip, and the guide also maps restaurants, shops and arts venues across the district.
The point of a week like this one is that none of it requires a reservation weeks out or a drive to West Palm Beach. A free blues night, a Saturday song circle and a closing weekend of a serious musical are all within walking distance of each other in Lake Worth Beach, and the cheapest of them costs nothing at all.
