North Miami's busiest night this week lands Friday, Oct. 16, when MOCA Plaza at 770 NE 125th Street turns into a free Hispanic Heritage Month block party layered on top of the city's twice-monthly NoMi Night Market. Around it sit a Saturday morning yoga class on the bay, a sunrise yoga session at Griffing Park, and a run of free weeknight classes at the public library on NE 132nd Street. Here is what is worth your time from Oct. 12 to 19, and why.

Friday: Una Noche Tropical meets the NoMi Night Market

The city is billing La Gran Fiesta Una Noche Tropical as its Hispanic Heritage Month celebration, and the lineup is built for dancing rather than standing around. Carlos Manuel plays live salsa, Don Moña brings merengue, Manny la Figura covers the urbano side, and DJ Xtreme holds the decks between sets, with Julio El Producer hosting. Music starts at 6 p.m., and the event is free and open to families.

The fiesta runs in partnership with the NoMi Night Market, which the city's economic development team stages on the first and third Friday of every month on the same plaza. That means food trucks and local vendors and artisans are already set up when the band starts, so you can eat dinner, shop a few tables and stay for the salsa without moving the car. If you have never been to a Night Market, this is the edition to try: the city has stacked its biggest heritage month party on top of it.

One planning note: the museum itself will not be part of the night. MOCA North Miami has closed its galleries since Oct. 5 to install its next exhibition, and its events page lists Geoffrey Holder: Black Magic for Nov. 12. The plaza out front is the venue on Friday, and it works well for a crowd, with the Gwathmey building as the backdrop and city hall next door.

Saturday: Yoga in the Park on North Bayshore Drive

At 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, District 2 Vice Mayor Kassandra Timothe is hosting Yoga in the Park at North Bayshore William Lehman Park, 12220 North Bayshore Drive. The pitch is simple: a class on the grass, under the trees, before the heat sets in. The park sits on the east side of the city near the water, which makes it one of the more pleasant places in North Miami to spend an early weekend hour.

The city's listing asks attendees to register through the link on the event page, and questions go to the District 2 constituent services office at 786-385-8662. A mat and a bottle of water are a good idea. If you have been meaning to try yoga but did not want to walk into a studio cold, a free outdoor class run by the city is about as low pressure as it gets.

Monday, Oct. 19: sunrise yoga in Griffing Park

North Miami turned 100 this year, and the city has spent its centennial year finding reasons to get residents out of the house. Monday brings one more: a free sunrise yoga session from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at Griffing Park, 12220 Griffing Boulevard, hosted by the District 3 office to open the week. It is early, but it is a good excuse to see the park at first light and be done before the school run.

All week: free classes at the North Miami Public Library

The library at 835 NE 132nd Street runs a steady weekly schedule that is easy to overlook and costs nothing. Three are worth circling:

Line Dancing Classes meet Wednesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. They are aimed at beginners, no experience needed, and are a fun midweek hour for adults who want to move without joining a gym.

Girls Who Code meets Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. and is built around STEM projects and the library's 3D printers. For a kid who likes to make things, getting hands on a 3D printer for free after school is a real draw.

The Lego Workshop runs Fridays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. It is the easy after-school stop for younger builders, and on Oct. 16 it doubles as a warmup: finish at the library around 4:30, then head a few blocks south to MOCA Plaza for dinner from the food trucks and the 6 p.m. start of the fiesta.

How to do the week

If you only make one thing, make it Friday. Park near city hall on NE 125th Street, arrive a little before 6 to get first pick of the food trucks, and plan to stay for the salsa set. Saturday's yoga is the best way to shake off a late Friday, and North Bayshore Drive is a short drive east across Biscayne Boulevard from downtown North Miami. If you are up early on Monday, Griffing Park's sunrise class is a calm way to start the week.

For anything that changes, the City of North Miami calendar is the place to check, and the library takes questions at 305-891-5535.
