Eight ten-minute Halloween plays in one night, a free talk on how art tells the American story, and a women's evening at the theater fill the Island City's calendar for the week of Oct. 23 to 30. Most of it happens within a few blocks of N. Dixie Highway and Wilton Drive, and several of the city's own wellness classes cost $10 or less.

Friday: Women's Night at Island City Stage

Island City Stage holds Women's Night at the Theatre on Friday, Oct. 23, with a pre-show reception at 7 p.m. (light bites and drinks) and an 8 p.m. performance of Who Killed Joan Crawford, the company's revival of the murder comedy it premiered in 2016. Tickets are $50, and the evening is sponsored by Margie Fried, with Women with Pride, the women's program at The Pride Center at Equality Park, as a partner. The theater asks that men pick another night so this one stays centered on women.

The play itself, written and directed by Michael Leeds, wraps up its run on Sunday, Oct. 25. It follows five men who show up at a cabin on a stormy night in 1993, each dressed as a different Joan Crawford role for a soap star's birthday party, until the guest list starts shrinking. It runs 90 minutes without an intermission. Thursday, Friday and Saturday matinee seats are $50, and Saturday and Sunday performances are $55. First-time visitors can ask about the theater's Free Friday tickets, funded by a Community Foundation of Broward grant while supply lasts.

Saturday: Board Games at the Library

The children's area of the Richard C. Sullivan Public Library, 500 NE 26th St., hosts family board games every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It is free and drop-in, so come and go anytime in that window. All ages are welcome. The same hours repeat on Halloween morning.

Monday: Frightenly Fabulous

On Monday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m., Rainbows and Ribbons Inc. takes over Island City Stage for Frightenly Fabulous, a one-night public reading of eight ten-minute LGBTQ+ Halloween plays that runs from comedy to drama to supernatural suspense. It is a fundraiser for the organization. The ensemble reading the plays is Briana Earhart, Eli Flynn, Hans Foy, Kevin Hincapie, Charlie Roye, Camille Schiavone, Terri Sullivan and James White III. Tickets are sold through the Island City Stage website.

Tuesday and Wednesday: Classes Around Town

Tuesday, Oct. 27, starts with Ashtanga yoga at the Island City Cultural Center, 600 NE 21st Court, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. The class links breath and movement in a continuous flow, with spoken cues and demonstrations for every level. It costs $10 a class, or $80 for a 10-class card.

That afternoon from 1 to 2 p.m., Hagen Park Community Center, 2020 Wilton Drive, hosts a free chair volleyball session. In the evening, Relax Creative Wellness leads a rhythm and movement class for adults and kids at Stafford Park and Nature Preserve, 823 NE 28th St., from 7 to 8 p.m. It is $15 per person, and one child gets in free with each paying adult. Registration is through the city's calendar listing.

On Wednesday, Oct. 28, from 10 to 11 a.m., Brains and Balance Past 60 at Hagen Park pairs memory and problem-solving activities with balance exercises. It is free for Wilton Manors residents and $3 for nonresidents.

Thursday: Art, America and Sound Therapy

Thursday, Oct. 29, opens at 10:30 a.m. with Chair Yoga Empower Hour and Sound Therapy at the Island City Cultural Center, a class built around balance, flexibility and strength, followed by music and tones. It costs $4 for residents and $5 for nonresidents.

That evening, the Friends of the Wilton Manors Library host a free lecture, Telling the Truth of America Through Art, at the library on NE 26th Street. Marlon Fass of the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale's Docent Speakers Bureau will walk through historical and contemporary works that tell the country's story, timed to the United States' 250th birthday. Refreshments start at 6:30 p.m., and the talk begins at 7.

The week ends with Halloween, when Wicked Manors takes over Wilton Drive on Saturday, Oct. 31.
