A Wellington road race heads into the marsh again this Sunday. The Wellington 5K, 10-Miler and Tower Challenge, now in its 21st year, starts and finishes at Greenbriar Park on Nov. 1, and its longest course runs through the Wellington Environmental Preserve, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat off Flying Cow Road.

The Wellington Runners Club organizes the race, and proceeds benefit the Kids Cancer Foundation and other local charities.

Three ways to run it

The 5K follows the path along Greenbriar Boulevard and turns into the start of the preserve. The club pitches it as a fall tune-up for runners training toward half and full marathons later in the season. Entry is $40.

The 10-Miler stays in the preserve and its Aero Club section, on a mix of paved path, shell rock road and boardwalks laid across the wetlands. Entry is $75.

The Tower Challenge is the 10-Miler with one addition: runners go up and back down the preserve's five-story observation tower during the race. It costs $85, and the registration page showed only four spots left as of Tuesday.

Race morning

Events run from 7 to 10 a.m. Online registration for the 10-Miler closes at 7:05 a.m. on race day and for the 5K at 7:25 a.m. The start and finish are at the Wellington Dog Park area of Greenbriar Park, 2965 Greenbriar Boulevard.

Anyone who uses the park that morning should plan around the race. The Village of Wellington says Greenbriar Park and all its public amenities, the dog park included, are closed until 10 a.m. on Nov. 1.
