Baptist Health has started building a new home for its neuroscience institute on the Baptist Hospital campus in Kendall, a 197,000-square-foot building where brain and spine care, rehabilitation and research will share one roof. It is slated to open in early 2029.

At the groundbreaking, Citadel founder and CEO Kenneth C. Griffin added a $25 million gift to the $50 million he gave in 2024, bringing his giving to neuroscience at Baptist Health to $75 million. In recognition, Miami Neuroscience Institute is now named the Baptist Health Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute.

What goes inside

According to Baptist Health, the building will let the institute:

  • Add 16 subspecialty providers and expand its number of exam rooms.
  • Offer outpatient physical, speech and occupational therapy and rehabilitation on site.
  • Provide neuroinfusion services.
  • Widen access to clinical trials, with clinical care and research in the same building.
  • Open Baptist Health's first academic lecture theater.

Who it serves

The institute treats complex neurological conditions, among them dementia and Alzheimer's disease, epilepsy, and movement disorders such as Parkinson's disease. It is part of Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care and trains medical students and residents through its partnership with FIU's Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

The institute is led by Dr. Michael McDermott, system chief executive of Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care and chair of the Department of Neurosciences at FIU's medical school. Bo Boulenger is president and CEO of Baptist Health.

Where the gift goes

The new $25 million creates the Kenneth C. Griffin Neuroscience Institute Transformational Impact Fund, which Baptist Health says will support research, innovation, education and prevention across its neuroscience programs. Griffin's 2024 gift of $50 million had already established the Kenneth C. Griffin Center at the institute.
