Coral Gables will hold its first Salute to Veterans on Wednesday, Nov. 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Giralda Plaza, and it anchors a week in which the city has something on the calendar nearly every night. Between tonight and next Friday there are two gallery and music nights downtown, a Sunday afternoon concert for veterans on the lawn of the Merrick House, and a free art show by local artists at The Palace. Here is what is happening and how to go.

Friday, Nov. 6: Gallery Night and Giralda Live

Galleries and art venues across downtown open their doors from 6 to 10 p.m. for Coral Gables Gallery Night, held on the first Friday of each month. The city suggests riding its trolleys or the Freebee on-demand vehicles to get from one stop to the next instead of moving the car.

The largest opening of the night is at Cernuda Arte, 3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd., which is unveiling Angel Acosta León: Selections. According to the city's listing, it is the biggest solo exhibition of the Cuban artist's work ever shown in the United States. The gallery is also previewing pieces headed to this year's Art Miami fair, showing 21 works by Tomás Sánchez made between the 1970s and the 2000s, and marking 100 years since the birth of the expressionist painter Gina Pellón. Cernuda Arte is open from 6 to 9 p.m. for the evening.

On Miracle Mile, the Leica Store Miami at 372 Miracle Mile is showing 212, a photography exhibition by Lisa Leone that documents the early years of hip-hop, graffiti and street culture in 1980s New York. Light snacks and drinks are part of the evening there.

A block over, Giralda Plaza (120 Giralda Ave.) turns into a pedestrian street party from 7 to 11 p.m. for Giralda Live, with the band on stage from 8 to 10 p.m. This month's act is Pamir y La Pachanguísima, a Latin ensemble led by the Grammy-winning Venezuelan flutist, saxophonist and singer Pamir Guanchez, mixing salsa, tropical rhythms and jazz. The series runs on the first Friday of every month through May, with no edition in December. Dinner at the restaurants along the plaza is the other half of the night.

Sunday, Nov. 8: Veterans Concert and Community Picnic

The Coral Gables Merrick House, 907 Coral Way, hosts a free afternoon for veterans and their families from 1 to 3 p.m. Scouts from Coral Gables Troops 7 and 719 lead a flag-raising ceremony at 1 p.m., and Miami's Top Brass plays ragtime jazz and patriotic music. Guests can spread a blanket and bring their own lunch, or buy food on site from Birdie Bistro and sit at the Lawn Table. The event is presented by the city's Department of Historical Resources and Cultural Arts with the Merrick House Governing Board.

The house, a 1920s landmark, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Docent-led tours of its 14 rooms run on Saturdays and Sundays at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. with no reservation, so visitors who arrive for the picnic can stay for a tour afterward. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and military, and parking behind the house is free.

Wednesday, Nov. 11: the first Coral Gables Salute to Veterans

On Veterans Day morning the city gathers at Giralda Plaza for its inaugural Salute to Veterans. The program includes a recognition ceremony for local veterans, representatives from the military branches, live music and activities for children and families. It runs from 9 to 11 a.m. and is open to the whole community.

Friday, Nov. 13: two ways to see local art

The 18th annual William M. Schiff Art Show fills The Palace, 1 Andalusia Ave., from 6 to 9 p.m. with work by local artists. The show is organized by the city's Adult Activity Center, and admission is free for residents and nonresidents alike. Questions go to the center at 305-461-6765.

The same night, Art in the Park returns to Ponce Circle Park, 2810 Ponce de Leon Blvd., from 7 to 11 p.m., combining live music, visual art and food in the park. It is the second and final date of the fall series, which began in October.
