Children in Deerfield Beach get a new place to climb next weekend. The City of Deerfield Beach will open the redesigned playground at Pioneer Park with a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, and the first kids through the gate will be the first to try it.

What is new

Pioneer Park sits at 217 NE 5th Ave., a few blocks west of Federal Highway. The city says the playground has been rebuilt with new structures and slides, sensory play elements and inclusive amenities, designed to give children a safe place to play.

The opening is free and open to everyone. The city is inviting families with children of all ages to take part in the ribbon-cutting and stay for the morning.

The night before

Families with leftover Halloween pumpkins can bring them to Quiet Waters Athletic Park, 4200 W Hillsboro Blvd., on Friday, Nov. 6, from 6 p.m., for the city's annual Pumpkin Smash with Filthy Organics, which turns the smashed pumpkins into compost. It runs ahead of that night's Movies in the Park.
