The Delray Beach Turkey Trot 5K reaches its 40th running on Saturday, November 21, starting and finishing at Anchor Park on the oceanfront, and every registered runner and walker goes home with a finisher medal made for the anniversary. The race sits in the middle of a busy stretch for Delray Beach: between Sunday, November 15, and race morning, downtown also hosts a free dog adoption day, a Brazilian jazz concert, a three-day handmade holiday market and a guided history walk down Atlantic Avenue.
Forty years of the Turkey Trot
The 5K is open to runners and walkers of any age or ability, and the course follows the ocean along South Ocean Boulevard from Anchor Park, 340 S Ocean Blvd. Race morning opens at 6:30 a.m. with registration and packet pickup at the park. Music starts at 7 a.m., a group warm-up follows at 7:10, and the national anthem and announcements come at 7:25 before the 7:30 a.m. start. Awards are handed out at 8:45 a.m.
Registration on the race's sign-up page is $39.50 for a timed entry and $34.50 for an untimed run or walk, with City of Delray Beach employees paying $35. Those prices go up after 11:59 p.m. on Friday, November 20. Each entry includes a race packet with a personalized bib, a 40th anniversary shirt and the finisher medal.
Runners who would rather not wait in line on race day have two early pickup windows. The first is Wednesday, November 18, from 9 a.m. to noon at City of Delray Beach Parks and Recreation, 50 NW 1st Ave. The second is Thursday, November 19, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Fleet Feet Delray Beach, 1705 S Federal Highway, Suite A5.
Sunday, November 15: dogs by day, bossa nova by night
Old School Square, 51 N Swinton Ave, hosts the 7th annual Pooches and Presents in the Park from noon to 4 p.m., put on by the group Delray Is Going to the Dogs. Admission is free and dogs are welcome. Adoptable dogs and puppies will be on site, along with activities for children and their pets, and there are prizes for dogs dressed in holiday outfits. Raffle winners are announced at 3:30 p.m.
That evening at 7, Arts Garage, 94 NE 2nd Ave, presents Rio de Janeiro singer Daniela Soledade in The Girl From Ipanema, a new program of classic bossa nova and samba jazz built around the songs of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joao Gilberto. Soledade's grandfather, Paulo Soledade, wrote songs alongside Jobim and other founders of the genre. She is backed by the Nate Najar Quartet with Santiago Galeano on piano, Renee Cruz on bass and Claudio Infante on drums. The show runs until 8:30 p.m., and tickets are $54 to $59 including fees.
November 19 to 21: a 33rd holiday craft market
The Pineapple Grove chapter of the Southern Handcraft Society brings back its An Olde Fashioned Holiday art and craft show for the 33rd year, this time in the Vintage Gym at Old School Square. The show is made up of handmade work by local artists and crafters: jewelry, wreaths, fiber arts, wood-turned pieces, knitted items, greeting cards, shaker ornaments, tropical home decor and gifts for children, plus seasonal pieces for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah.
Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, November 20, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 21, so the final morning lines up with the Turkey Trot for anyone who wants to run first and shop after.
Saturday, November 21: Atlantic Avenue's back story
Later that same morning, the Delray Beach Historical Society leads a two-hour walking tour of Atlantic Avenue with Tom Warnke, the society's historian and archive coordinator. The route covers landmarks such as the Colony Hotel, built in 1926, and the Atlantic Avenue Bridge, from 1952, along with buildings in the Old School Square and Marina districts that date from the city's founding years through the 1920s land boom and the years after the Depression. The society says the walk includes special stops and refreshments.
The tour runs from 10 a.m. to noon and begins at the society's campus, 3 NE 1st Street. Tickets are $30, or $20 for society members, and registration is through the society's website.
