Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, and the weekend around it runs from a free two-day pirate festival in Boynton Beach to the last three days of the Fort Lauderdale boat show and a pay-what-you-can Dia de Muertos performance at Miami's Arsht Center on Sunday. Here are six things happening from Friday, Oct. 30, through Sunday, Nov. 1, across Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade.
Pirate Fest (Boynton Beach)
The City of Boynton Beach's Pirate Fest runs Saturday, Oct. 31, from noon to 10 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 1, from noon to 6 p.m. at Centennial Park and Amphitheater, 120 E. Ocean Ave., and along East Ocean Avenue. Admission is free. The city lists live music, pirate stunt shows, cannon demonstrations, mermaid encounters and pirate encampments, plus a Lil' Scallywag Zone with face painting, sword fighting and archery. Saturday adds trick-or-treating, costume contests and a Haunted Trail after dark. Parking and shuttles are free. The city has warned that someone is using the Pirate Fest name to solicit vendors; its official information is at bbpiratefest.com.
Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (Fort Lauderdale)
The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show wraps up its five-day run this weekend, spread across the Broward County Convention Center, Bahia Mar Yachting Center, Hall of Fame Marina, Las Olas Marina, Pier Sixty-Six Marina and Superyacht Village at Pier Sixty-Six South. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are sold on the show's website.
Christian McBride and Ursa Major (Palm Beach)
Christian McBride and Ursa Major play at Glazer Hall, 70 Royal Poinciana Way, on Friday, Oct. 30, as part of the venue's jazz series. Tickets are on the hall's website.
Outdoor movie night (Palm Beach Gardens)
Downtown Palm Beach Gardens holds an outdoor screening of Hocus Pocus on Friday, Oct. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m.
Halloween Skate and Scooter Contest (Jupiter)
The Town of Jupiter holds its Halloween costume and trick contest at the Jupiter Skate Park on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 3 to 9 p.m., with prizes awarded by age division.
Journey to Dia de Muertos (Miami)
On Sunday, Nov. 1, at 3 p.m., Calpulli Mexican Dance Company performs Journey to Dia de Muertos in the Knight Concert Hall at the Adrienne Arsht Center. The hourlong show tells a love story that crosses the line between the living and the dead through folk songs, classical music and dance. It is part of the Arsht for Miami series and priced pay what you can, starting at $0. The Arsht lists the show at capacity, but says unused tickets will be released at showtime on a first-come, first-served basis, and every attendee needs a ticket regardless of age.
