Bassist Ron Carter and his Foursight Quartet will close the Hollywood Real Jazz Festival at ArtsPark at Young Circle on Saturday, Nov. 21, at the end of an afternoon that is free from the first note to the last. Singer and pianist Kandace Springs and vibraphonist Warren Wolf are also on the bill.
The festival runs two days in downtown Hollywood, Friday, Nov. 20, and Saturday, Nov. 21. It is produced by The Rhythm Foundation for the City of Hollywood and presented by SiriusXM, which is carrying the Saturday music live on the radio.
Friday: the tree lighting and a high school band
The festival opens alongside the City of Hollywood's annual tree lighting. Festivities at ArtsPark start at 5 p.m., the tree is lit at 7 p.m., and at 8 p.m. the Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble from Dillard High School in Fort Lauderdale takes the stage. The city lists the Friday event from 5 to 9 p.m., and it is free.
Saturday: the full lineup
Saturday's music runs from early afternoon into the evening. The festival's posted schedule:
- 1 p.m. Nicole Yarling
- 2 p.m. Warren Wolf
- 3:15 p.m. Chuck Bergeron
- 3:45 p.m. Kandace Springs
- 5 p.m. Chuck Bergeron
- 5:30 p.m. Ron Carter Foursight Quartet
- 7 p.m. Downtown Jazz After Dark, with music spread through downtown Hollywood
Chuck Bergeron appears twice, at 3:15 and 5 p.m., between the headline sets, so the music runs nearly without a break from 1 p.m. until Carter's quartet.
Listening from home
SiriusXM is broadcasting the festival live on Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. on its Real Jazz channel, channel 67, with host Mark Ruffin. That makes the Young Circle lawn the source of a national jazz broadcast for the afternoon, and it also means a resident who cannot get downtown can still hear Carter's set as it happens.
After the park empties
The last listing of the night, Downtown Jazz After Dark at 7 p.m., moves the music out of ArtsPark and into downtown Hollywood itself. The festival lists it as taking place throughout downtown Hollywood, so the evening carries on in the streets around the circle after the final set in the park.
How to go
ArtsPark at Young Circle is at 1 North Young Circle in downtown Hollywood, where Hollywood Boulevard meets U.S. 1. Admission to both days is free, with no tickets required. The festival's page does not list food vendors or parking details, so plan on the downtown garages and street parking around the circle, and check the festival page in the days before for any updates to the schedule.
Friday, Nov. 20: tree lighting festivities from 5 p.m., lighting at 7 p.m., Dillard Center for the Arts Jazz Ensemble at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21: music from 1 p.m., Ron Carter Foursight Quartet at 5:30 p.m., Downtown Jazz After Dark from 7 p.m.
