Hollywood is getting a new set of giant letters. On Tuesday, November 10, at 9 a.m., the City of Hollywood, Miami Realtors and RWorld will unveil a freestanding HOLLYWOOD sign at the corner of Johnson Street and U.S. 441 on the city's west side, and the public is invited to come see it go live.
The sign spells out the city's name in white aluminum letters that stand 4 feet tall. It was designed by artist Daniel Jimenez and paid for through a Placemaking Grant from the National Association of Realtors, which Miami Realtors and RWorld awarded to the city. The ceremony is scheduled to run about 45 minutes, from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
A photo stop on the west side
The city describes the letters as both a public art piece and a welcome marker for the neighborhood around the 441 corridor. The new sign sits beside a playground and a linear park, and the city is encouraging people to stop for a photo, let the kids play and walk the park while they are there.
The point of the placemaking program is to turn an ordinary piece of public space into a spot people want to visit and recognize as their own. In Hollywood's case, that means a corner most residents know as a busy intersection on the way somewhere else is getting a reason to pull over.
Part of a South Florida series
Hollywood joins a growing list of South Florida cities with letter installations from Miami Realtors and RWorld. The group has built similar four-foot letter sets in Miami Gardens, Miami, Doral, Sweetwater, Miami Springs, Jupiter, Miami Lakes, Coral Gables, Hialeah and Homestead, each funded through the national association's placemaking grant program. Miami Realtors reports investing more than $618,000 in South Florida communities through these grants since 2017.
Each set in the series spells out the name of its host city, which makes Hollywood's version a natural backdrop for family photos, graduation pictures and visiting relatives who want proof they made it to Hollywood, Florida.
More free things to do in Hollywood the same week
The unveiling kicks off a full week on the city calendar. A few other free or low cost events are lined up within days of it:
