Homestead is putting a real outdoor ice rink in Losner Park this winter. The city's Discover Homestead Winter Wonderland opens the weekend of Nov. 20 at 104 N. Krome Ave. and runs through Sunday, Jan. 10, turning the park in the middle of downtown into a skating rink, a play area, a food hall and a holiday market at once.

What is in the park

The city lists four parts to the setup:

  • The ice rink. Real ice, outdoors, under the sky.
  • The Adventure Park, with themed inflatables, games and activities for kids.
  • The Food Hall, for something to eat between skating sessions.
  • The Market Village, for holiday shopping.

An Enchanted Forest walk, themed scavenger hunts, live music and character appearances are part of the program too.

A new theme every two weeks

The city is changing the look and the programming every two weeks, so a family that goes in November finds something different in December. The themes on the schedule are Let the Magic Begin, a world inspired by Whoville, Santa's Coming to Town and Wild Wild West Winter.

Tickets

Tickets run from free to $22 on the city's SimpleTix page, where the different ticket types and the dates they cover are listed. Buying ahead online is the way to see what each level includes before you go.

Make a night of it downtown

Losner Park sits on Krome Avenue in downtown Homestead, steps from the Seminole Theatre. The city's own description of the event points visitors to the downtown's restaurants and eateries for a meal before or after a skate.

One note for drivers this week, before the rink opens: the city has closed the intersection of Lucy Street and Krome Avenue to through traffic for about a week starting Nov. 1 for sewer work, with turns between the two streets prohibited. The city expected that work to take about a week, and it says the Lucy Trolley may be affected while it lasts.
