Key Biscayne residents can clear out old laptops, phone chargers, paper files and outgrown kids' gear in one stop on Saturday, November 7, when a Community Recycling and Reuse Drive runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Key Biscayne Presbyterian School, 160 Harbor Drive.

The drive is hosted by the school's Creation Care Committee, the Village of Key Biscayne and the group A Zero Waste Culture, and it is timed to America Recycles Day. Along with electronics recycling, the event offers document shredding, plus separate collections for items that can be recycled, donated or reused.

Electronics and shredding

The headline collections are electronics recycling and document shredding. On the electronics side, the flyer on the Village calendar shows laptops, phones, headphones and cables, and the drop-off guide lists small electronics along with CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, cassettes and their plastic cases. Paper documents can be brought for shredding.

Recycle, donate, reuse

The event flyer sorts the extra collections into three streams. Glass, batteries and ink cartridges go to recycling. Clothing, books and baby items are collected as donations. Sports gear, costumes and home decor are gathered for reuse, so they can go to a new home instead of a landfill. Paint, corks and coffee pods are accepted as well.

What else you can drop off

The organizers published a guide of accepted items, sorted into four groups.

Before you go

Condition matters for the donation and reuse categories. Clothing, baby gear, costumes, soccer gear and stuffed animals should be in reusable condition, while sneakers and Christmas lights are accepted in any condition. Glass should be emptied and rinsed, and pumpkins should have their stickers removed. The organizers point residents to the collection guide for the full list of accepted items and requirements, so check it before loading the car.
