The Pompano Players are giving South Florida its first look at Gutenberg! The Musical!, and the run is half over. The show opened Nov. 6 at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center, plays a matinee this afternoon, Sunday, Nov. 8, at 2 p.m., and closes after four more performances next weekend, Nov. 13 to 15.
It is the South Florida premiere of the show, and the first production of the company's six-show 2026-27 season.
What the show is
Gutenberg! The Musical! is a comedy that sends up musical theater itself. Two aspiring writers pitch the over-the-top musical they have written about Johannes Gutenberg and the invention of the printing press, and the evening is that pitch.
The show has a long trail of awards attention behind it. It drew Lucille Lortel and Outer Critics Circle nominations in 2007, and in 2024 it was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical, along with Drama Desk and Drama League nominations.
Who the Pompano Players are
The Pompano Players are the professional resident theater company of the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. Pompano Beach Arts presents their season at the center alongside its own series of live theater and tribute concerts.
